Arapahoe County Quilters

Celebrating the Art of Quiltmaking for 30+ Years

ACQ News

  • January 02, 2022 7:25 PM | Lynn Roginski

One of the most treasured benefit of ACQ membership is access to our Quilt Bees. These are small groups that gather weekly or monthly to sewcialize. Joining a bee is a wonderful way to meet new people, make friends, learn new techniques and enhance quilting skills. Meeting locations vary by bee and the place, schedule and intentions are set by each bee. Historically bees were often formed by geographic location and desired meeting time but some meet mainly on Zoom.

Many bees are currently open to new members and you can find contact  information for those bees here. To see individual bee members, visit the Membership Directory and use the third search column at the top of the page. If you're in a bee but not listed correctly, you can update your ACQ profile to make changes.

I am pleased and proud to report that Arapahoe County Quilters Guild donated over 300 quilts to 6 different locations. These locations were suggested by ACQ members and were chosen to give some joy to people experiencing hardships. Thank you to the amazing and talented ACQ members who took part in a most successful year for Charity Quilts.

303 Quilts donated to 6 locations (13 deliveries)

20    Florence Crittenton (Family resource for teen mothers)

22    Warren Village (Home for low income single parent families)

31    Children’s Hospital Anschutz Medical Campus

36    Marisol Family Home Catholic Charities (Survivors of domestic abuse)

36    Volunteers of America Clermont Commons (Women Veterans)

158     Volunteers of America Family Motel (Emergency homeless situations)

At the end of December, I decided to put together a Snowball quilt for my new baby granddaughter. Since this little person does not care about colors or patterns, I picked the pattern as I am wishing for snow here in Denver. Yes, I will put together a few kits to hand out something fun and easy for Charity Quilts. I listed a couple of websites to share the pattern and inspire fellow ACQ members.

    https://www.allpeoplequilt.com/quilt-patterns/quilt-throws/sweet-snowball-throw

    https://quiltinspiration.blogspot.com/2013/03/free-pattern-day-snowball-quilts.html

I look forward to the next ACQ Drive-Through scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 2022. If this date and time does not work for you, please contact me by email so we can arrange a pick up for blocks, kits, tops, fabric or completed quilts.

    Goal Setting

The new year is notoriously the time for new beginnings and goal setting. As ACQ continues to look for ways to highlight our three-fold mission: Fellowship, Education and Charity - we have some great opportunities coming in 2022.  n the fellowship front, we continue to have our monthly guild meetings.  For now, they will continue on Zoom in order to keep our community safe. We are hoping that we will be able to meet in person, and have hybrid meetings (both streamed online and held in person) later in the year.

On the education front, we have some excellent opportunities for workshops coming up. There is still space in the January workshop which will teach us creative new ways to use the Dresden plate. We will be hosting workshops primarily online, with a couple opportunities to meet in person. The in-person opportunities will be space limited, so you are encouraged to sign up early if you would like to attend.

On the charity front, we continue to partner with those in need in our community. Whether it is through patriotic quilts for female veterans, children’s quilts for Children’s Hospital, larger quilts for those in transitional housing, or blankets for infant loss - our guild continues to support the community with quilty hugs.

In 2022, I have a goal for ACQ that I hope you will join me in accomplishing. I would love to see 75% of our members helping in some manner - whether that be a one-time volunteer opportunity at a drive through, donating a quilt for charity, or sharing our auction opportunities with family and friends - ACQ is only as strong as its members.

To pique your interest for the 2022 workshops, in last month’s article we featured the January workshop.  This month we are sharing information about the March workshop.  It looks like it will be lots of fun.

MEXICAN STARS WALL-HANGING with Annette Ornelas

Learn how to achieve curved results with straight-line piecing in this easy but complex looking design.  This is a popular workshop with easy dimensional curves along with some strip piecing.  No matter the color combination, the results are spectacular!

The dimensional piecing technique consists of layering and inserting folded fabric pieces into the seam line of a pieced unit or block.  A curve appears when the bias edges are turned and stitched down.  This workshop is a great way to learn this technique without being overwhelmed by a large quilt!  Come and join us!!

Quilting has so many opportunities to bring joy. When there is much we cannot control in our lives making quilts gives the opportunity to choose fabrics, colors, patterns, and threads.

To finish out this year, the ACQ Charity Quilts committee would like to make another donation of quilts to Volunteers of America locations at Clermont Commons and the Family Motel. One more drop in early December will help ACQ Charity Quilts exceed the number donated last year and help to achieve this year’s goal of 300 quilts.

Please contact me if you have completed quilts ready to donate. We will schedule a meet up.

The most recent donation of 25 quilts was at VOA Family Motel. I love that I receive a warm welcome from the receptionist at the front desk and the security detail who helps me carry in the quilts. Please see the photo of the beautiful quilts ready to share comfort and joy.

A Season of Love and Light

As this year comes to a close, I would like all of us to use a few moments to reflect upon the holiday season.  While 2021 probably didn’t look as we expected, we have a lot of things to be thankful for that helped to share the love and light of our quilting community.  We surpassed our goal of completing baby blankets for those going through infant loss.  As the only guild in Colorado working on this project, we successfully gathered almost 300 blankets to help those going through the unimaginable.  We also collected and donated over 200 completed quilts to several different charities, including those helping those struggling to get back on their feet, children who are hospitalized, and young mothers.  This alone is quite a feat - yet that is not the only accomplishment of love and light our guild has had this year.

We continued to thrive during uncertain times, finding ways to get together even if it meant in smaller groups.  We had several drive-through events to collect and disseminate charity quilts, swap patterns, purchase panels and books, and enjoy some time with our fellow quilters.  We hung a panel challenge in the parking lot of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and had an opportunity to tour the museum and meet the makers of both the children’s quilt club and an exhibit.

We also found ways to bring love and light into our own quilting by participating in lectures and workshops that stimulated our minds and gave us new skills to enhance our quilting, bag making and fabric dyeing.

Although it may have looked different than years past, we accomplished all three pillars on which the guild was founded: charity work, education and fellowship.  The coming year, 2022, will no doubt bring different challenges and opportunities for us to build and grow.  We have a celebration of quilts through the 2022 Festival of Quilts coming in June, and hope that all members choose to participate in some manner - bringing together charity, education and fellowship in an event that showcases our work to the public.  We will also have more opportunities to connect, build and grow as a quilting community, while we continue to spread love and light in 2022.

Charity Quilts is in a flurry of activity to reach our goal of 300 quilts delivered in 2021. If you have kits to finish or quilts to quilt or quilted quilts to bind in your possession, join us for the last Charity Quilts Community Sew Day of 2021. We'll be meeting on Zoom on November 28 so sign up to get the Zoom link. There won't be any more Drive-thrus in 2021 but reach out to Sheila Clark if you have questions.

The ladies of CPNLS, Deb Gudel and Vivian Cardenas, are handing off the program to Beth Taggert and Doreen Mortimer and were seen at the October 30 Drive-thru passing the baton and their wisdom to the new chairpersons. Thanks Deb and Vivian for everything you've done for this charity and Welcome Beth & Doreen!

Did you know there's a new section on the website expressly to capture in pictures the work of ACQ's Charitable Activities?

It is mid-October and I am writing this article for the November newsletter.  It is in advance of our October 30th book fair, but the newsletter will be issued in early November – after the book fair.

I want to give thanks in advance to those volunteers who helped with the book fair.  Equally important, I want to thank everyone who showed up for the book fair.  We hope you are enjoying your purchases and are having fun getting inspired and starting some new projects.  In fact, we have a favor to ask:  it would be great if people shared pictures on the ACQ FB community page of the books you purchased, plans you have and/or projects that are underway based on your purchase.  It will be fun to see what the second life looks like for these books.

    Happy reading and happy quilting!
